BaaS - Backup as a Service

For most organizations, cloud backup and Backup as a Service (BaaS) solutions are quickly replacing traditional data backup solutions. Along with SaaS, organizations increasingly embrace other as-a-service models, including infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS). The popularity of these models led to the coining of the term everything as a service (XaaS) to represent this trend toward services delivered via the cloud. With over 25 years in the technology industry delivering several different offerings as-a-service, including conferencing, email security, and now infrastructure, I believe it’s particularly important to evaluate the fit between the actual offering and its delivery model.

Data Backups provide a compelling use case for the as-a-service model, including the tremendous cost savings of moving backups into cloud storage. Other companies offering backup-as-a-service include Code42 for endpoint data protection and Mozy by EMC for small businesses, though these are cloud-based instead of hybrid solutions. But many enterprises still back up data on-premise and manage it all on their own rather than outsource the job.

Below are the benefits of implementing a backup as a service (BaaS) solution for your organization. Backup as a service with cloud tiering means storage on demand. IT gains time to advance the enterprise’s objectives. Outsourced performance monitoring offers backup peace of mind. Understanding Backup as a Service (BaaS) With the continued growth of services, we consume through the internet, the “cloud” has given rise to numerous Cloud Service Providers who offer a wide variety of services to businesses and consumers. These “as a Service” products work especially well for organizations that lack the infrastructure or expertise to deploy such services in house. This includes Backup as a Service.   Backup as a service (BaaS) is a strategy for backup and recovery that involves purchasing these services to be managed by a Cloud Service Provider. Instead of performing backup with centralized on-premises equipment and personnel, BaaS connects IT systems to a private, public or hybrid cloud managed by the Cloud Service Provider.

Why worry about rotating and managing tapes or hard disks to get your data offsite, when data storage administrators can offload maintenance and management to the provider?
With a Backup as a Service offering, many of the complexities of a varied backup strategy are offloaded onto the service provider.  In return, the service provider may charge a monthly rate depending on the level of service offered. Take the offsite repository for example. In order to get a copy of your backup data offsite, you would need to invest in IT facilities, hardware, and support personnel if you were to do it yourself.
