How should you compare HCI with a traditional server and storage design?
Compare the workload, growth pattern, resilience requirements, operating skills and licensing model. Hyperconverged infrastructure combines several infrastructure functions into a managed platform; whether that helps depends on how your applications consume resources and how your team operates them.
Understand how capacity grows
Some applications need more compute while others need more storage. Ask how the proposed platform expands and what minimum additions are required. A simple scale-out model can be useful, but only if it matches the workload's growth.
Test failure and maintenance scenarios
Review what happens when a node fails or needs an update. Check usable capacity and performance while a component is unavailable. Nominal capacity is not the same as capacity that remains available under the required resilience policy.
Compare the operating effort
Assess provisioning, monitoring, patching, recovery and skills. A consolidated interface can reduce some tasks while introducing platform-specific procedures. Ask for a demonstration of routine maintenance rather than judging only the sales dashboard.
Include the commercial lifecycle
Compare hardware support, software subscriptions, backup compatibility and expansion costs. Confirm current terms with the vendor. Consider how data and workloads could be moved if the platform no longer suits the business.
Use a representative application set for sizing and validation. Choose the architecture that supports the required service, not the one with the most impressive raw capacity figure.
