Quick answer
EDR is software on laptops and servers that records activity, detects attacks and lets you isolate a device. XDR extends that detection to email, identity, cloud and network data and links related alerts into one incident. MDR is a service: a provider's analysts watch the EDR or XDR around the clock and respond. The first two are tools; MDR is the team operating them.
EDR, XDR and MDR compared
| EDR | XDR | MDR | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category | Product | Product or platform | Managed service |
| Data sources | Endpoints and servers | Endpoints plus email, identity, cloud apps, network, sometimes firewall | Whatever tools the provider operates, usually EDR or XDR |
| Who triages alerts | Your team | Your team, with better correlation | The provider’s analysts, 24/7 |
| Response | Isolate host, kill process, roll back where supported | Coordinated actions across endpoint, mailbox and identity | Provider acts within agreed authority and notifies you |
| Best fit | Organisations with someone to watch alerts | Teams that want fewer, richer incidents | Organisations without round-the-clock security staff |
The labels overlap in the market. Many EDR products now ingest some identity or email signals and are sold as XDR, and many vendors bundle MDR with their own XDR. Ask what is actually collected and who is actually watching.
What each layer sees in a real attack
Consider a common sequence in UAE businesses: a convincing invoice email, a stolen Microsoft 365 password, a sign-in from an unusual country, then malware on a finance laptop and attempts to reach the file server.
| Attack stage | EDR | XDR | MDR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phishing email delivered | Not visible | Visible if email security is connected | Analyst sees it if email is in scope |
| Suspicious sign-in | Not visible | Visible through identity signals | Analyst can disable the account |
| Malware runs on laptop | Detected and can be isolated | Detected and linked to the sign-in | Analyst isolates and investigates |
| Lateral movement to server | Detected if the server has the agent | Correlated into one incident | Contained, with a report for you |
EDR is the foundation in every option. XDR improves context. MDR adds the people who act on it at 3 a.m. on a Friday.
Choosing by team capacity
The deciding question is rarely the technology. It is who will investigate an alert outside office hours, over the weekend or during Eid. Attackers often run ransomware when offices are empty, so an alert that waits until Monday can be too late.
- Choose EDR alone if you have trained staff who review alerts daily and an agreed out-of-hours escalation, and your estate is small.
- Choose XDR if alert volume is already a burden and you want email, identity and endpoint signals in one console, with your own team still in charge.
- Choose MDR if no one is available to watch alerts around the clock, or if a regulator, client or insurer expects continuous monitoring.
- Consider a managed SOC when you also need log sources beyond the vendor’s own platform, such as firewalls, line-of-business applications and compliance reporting. See managed SOC and SOAR.
Licensing can tip the decision. Microsoft 365 Business Premium includes Defender for Business with EDR for up to 300 users, and Microsoft 365 E5 includes Defender for Endpoint Plan 2 and other XDR components, so many UAE organisations already own the tool and only lack the monitoring.
Questions to ask an MDR provider
- Which EDR or XDR products do you operate, and can you use the licences we already own?
- What can your analysts do without asking us first: isolate a device, disable an account, block a hash?
- What are the hours of coverage and the target time from detection to containment for critical incidents?
- Where is our telemetry stored and processed, and for how long? Is any of it outside the UAE?
- How do you onboard: agent deployment, tuning period, exclusions for line-of-business software?
- What reporting do we receive monthly, and what support is included after a confirmed incident?
Agree the escalation contacts and response authority in writing before go-live. Most disputes with MDR providers come from unclear permission to act, not from missed detections.
Rolling out the right option
Whichever model you choose, coverage matters more than features. An EDR missing from a quarter of laptops or from the domain controllers leaves the gaps attackers use. Deploy to servers first, enforce tamper protection, remove the old antivirus cleanly and track coverage weekly.
emtech’s EDR, XDR and MDR service helps UAE organisations compare products, deploy agents across endpoints and servers, and choose the level of monitoring that fits the team they have.
Frequently asked questions
Is XDR just EDR with a new name?
No, although the line is blurred in marketing. Genuine XDR correlates signals from several sources, such as email, identity and cloud apps, into a single incident; EDR focuses on endpoint activity alone.
Can MDR work with the EDR we already own?
Often, yes. Many MDR providers operate common EDR platforms, including Microsoft Defender. Confirm that your licence tier exposes the features the provider needs, such as advanced hunting and remote response.
Does MDR replace a SIEM?
Not fully. MDR focuses on detecting and responding to threats in the provider's chosen tools, while a SIEM collects logs from many systems for investigation, retention and compliance reporting. Some organisations need both.
What size of business benefits from MDR?
Size matters less than staffing. A 50-user firm with no security staff may gain more from MDR than a 1,000-user firm with its own security operations team. The test is whether alerts get investigated at night and over weekends.
How quickly can EDR be deployed across a company?
For a typical SME, agent deployment can be completed in days to a few weeks through Intune or another management tool. Tuning exclusions for business software and removing the previous antivirus usually takes a few more weeks.
