What should a business prepare before requesting a CCTV proposal?
Prepare a site plan, security objectives, coverage areas, operating conditions and access requirements. Ask a qualified provider to confirm applicable approvals and installation requirements for the location. Camera count alone is not enough to define a suitable system.
Explain the purpose of each area
Decide whether the objective is general observation, incident review or another defined task. Camera placement and image requirements should follow that purpose. A camera that shows a wide area may not provide the detail needed for a particular investigation.
Record the environment
Include lighting changes, entrances, obstructions, indoor and outdoor conditions, and network availability. Confirm how cameras will be powered and connected. These constraints can change the design substantially.
Define footage handling
Specify authorised viewers, export procedures and the required retention policy, subject to applicable requirements. Consider storage capacity, access logging and recovery. Avoid assuming that all footage should be available to every administrator.
Confirm compliance and handover
Ask the installer to identify the requirements that apply to the actual site and document the approval path where needed. A marketing phrase such as “compliant camera” is not evidence that the whole installation has been approved.
At handover, check live views, recorded playback, time settings and access controls. Collect diagrams, inventory and operating instructions, and agree who handles maintenance after installation.
